Six hardy athletes competed in the cold for Burnley in the first masters event of the season at Cleckheaton last Wednesday. Four records were broken in what was a very successful evening for the Burnley AC contingent.
Scott Gizon was the star of the show breaking two throwing records in the M40 category on his Burnley AC debut, his Shot Put of 10.36m and Discus throw of 30.26m show his massive potential and what a big asset he will be to the club.
Scott’s coach John Edwards shows no signs of chucking in the towel and his record breaking throw of 30.66m in the M65 Discus is testament to the hard work he has put into his winter training, John is the coach to some very talented athletes and his performances prove that age is no barrier especially when year after year he is ranked in the top three for the Hammer for his age in the country.
Chris Smale is another athlete who has trained hard throughout the winter to get himself in top shape for the summer track season, he has gone out of his comfort zone to train with the sprint group to improve his sharpness and this has paid off with an excellent 2m 39.6 secs in the M55 800m, this time sets a new record and we are sure that will be lowered again by Chris before the season is over.
Special mentions go to Michael Williams in the 1500m, John Linaker in the 200m & 400m and also Rachel Holt who competed as a guest in the Long Jump as she eagerly awaits the step up to Masters status in September.
Mike Linaker as always puts the athletes first by giving up his time to officiate on the evening, without Mike’s consistent help these events could not function, he is one of a small number of officials who give their time up FREE of charge to allow the meetings to go ahead, his contribution cannot be underestimated.
Steve Goodwill (Hamstring) and Helen Goodwill (Back) were nursing injuries that kept them out at Cleckheaton but they hope they will be fit in time to compete at the next NMAC meeting which is at OUR track at Burnley on Wednesday 15th May with a 7pm start.
This meeting will need as much help on the night as it can from volunteers to be a success, it lasts less than two hours so any assistance will be a massive bonus to the club, please see Steve, Helen or Mike to confirm your offer of help.
